Vlad Smolkin: Black Strawberry
February 15 - April 1, 2018

Step Sister is pleased to announce its inaugural exhibition, Vlad Smolkin: Black Strawberry. Featuring intimately sized abstract paintings, constructed from combinations of wood, cardboard, canvas, metal, clay, and various objects, the works in the exhibition are threaded together by an illustrated black strawberry in the center of each. A compositional red herring, the strawberry performs disparate roles, acting as void, punctuation or logistical foil to the painting vocabulary employed in each piece. This suite of works commits to visual indeterminacy as an aesthetic value, where the strawberry is both a catalyst and a vacuum for meaning. The works on view exist in an in-between space they are neither alive or dead, quantifiable or abstruse.
